Alebrije with Seashell
Description
Large alebrije that fuses features of a dragon, turtle, and bull in a stalking stance. The head, covered in blue scales, opens into jaws with a full set of teeth and a red forked tongue; long black whiskers frame the snout beneath a pair of ascending horns decorated in ochre and gold tones. On its back, a shell with a metallic finish—which gives the piece its name—acts as a protective carapace, while the muscular body, with sharp white claws, resolves into a mosaic of decorative pointillism in silver, black, ochre, and red. The tail coils in a spiral with green and yellow scales topped with orange crests. It is essentially an alebrije as a dream made tangible.
PROVENANCE AND HISTORICAL CONTEXT
