Alebrije. Mexican paper maché sculpture — Felipe Linares Vargas (grandson of Don Pedro Linares)

This piece masterfully merges two distinct realms into a single creature of overwhelming visual power. The composition is resolved in two clearly differentiated halves that, nevertheless, converse with each other in perfect chromatic and compositional harmony.

The head, with a strong character, exhibits a half-open snout that reveals a row of sharp white fangs over an intense red mouth and tongue, providing the ferocity characteristic of the Linares bestiary. The fur on the face is rendered with very fine calligraphic lines in sienna and ochre tones that simulate hair texture, dotted with black spots that already hint, from the head, at the bee's abdominal pattern. A pair of pink, short, and rounded ears peek out between two large curved horns with a graphite and silver finish, whose silhouette evokes that of a bull.

The thorax and abdomen, in contrast, belong entirely to the entomological world: the body lengthens into a bulbous abdomen decorated with the classic yellow and black stripes of the bee, executed with the pointillist detail typical of fine paper maché, and speckled with silver dots that give it an almost metallic sheen. From the back emerge two pairs of membranous wings —translucent towards the base, golden and veined with dark lines towards the tip—, treated with the delicacy of a stained-glass window.

The six legs, long, articulated, and with a black finish with coppery veins and red spots, end in pointed claws that support the body in a forward stance, half attack, half imminent flight.

The result is an impossible being that condenses two natures —the aggression of the bull and the industriousness of the bee— in the tradition of alebrijes as dreamlike creatures born from the fusion of animals that never existed.

PROVENANCE

This piece was made by Felipe Linares Vargas, grandson of Don Pedro Linares —creator of the alebrije as an art form—, continuing the paper maché tradition that the Linares family has maintained and developed over three generations in Mexico City.

To preserve the beauty and integrity of this piece, we recommend handling it with care. As it is a paper maché artwork, avoid contact with water or moisture —it should never be washed—; clean it only with a soft duster or a dry cloth, without rubbing. Keep it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent pigment discoloration, and store it in a stable, dry, and moisture-free environment. When moving it, always hold it from its base or main body, avoiding pressure on horns, whiskers, claws, or other delicate and protruding elements.
